This map, provided by the Lake Waccamaw Town Council, shows the service area to be covered by the town’s Fire and Rescue department beginning Jan. 1.  Whiteville Rescue Unit will serve the area through Dec. 31. Staff photo by Diana Matthews

Whiteville Rescue Unit began early this month to provide emergency medical services to residents of the county’s Lake Waccamaw response district, county Emergency Services Director Nick West confirmed last week. West, who is also an assistant county manager, said the arrangement is working well so far. It is expected to continue through the rest of 2022. With one Whiteville Rescue ambulance standing by at the Lake Waccamaw Fire Department, and two squad members on the premises around the clock, he said, “Response time is relatively quick.”

Whiteville Rescue Unit has passed along to West several  compliments received on the service, West said last week; Lake district residents “are glad we’re providing it.”
