At its 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday, Whiteville City Council will consider approving a flood mitigation plan that sets out to tackle everything from nuisance stormwater puddles to 500-year flood events.

After the city experienced widespread flooding due to Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Florence in 2018, council entered into an agreement with N.C. State University’s Coastal Dynamics Design Lab in January 2022 to explore potential flooding solutions. Since then, the group has assessed buildings throughout the city, surveyed whole neighborhoods and hosted community input forums to tailor its plan to residents’ needs.
